We’re implementing a post-operative delirium prevention bundle to decrease this common complication in older patients undergoing surgery.
Our multi-pronged approach to post-operative delirium prevention includes:
- Pre-operative screening and identification of high risk patients
- Pre-operative patient and family/caregiver education
- Intraoperative anesthetic management optimization
- Post-operative delirium surveillance
- Non-pharmacologic interventions to mitigate the risk of delirium post-operatively
- Optimized pain control while minimizing high risk medications, and
- Avoidance of certain medications during the perioperative period that can contribute to delirium.
